MARTHA SCRIBES

"The connection of movement in art and nature is the stillness of a feeling expressed through the abstract wording and painting in fine and thoughtful artwork. My mission is to bring my students' and clients' visions to life in my unique style & methods."

Our clientele spans the globe and includes individuals seeking to learn calligraphy, refine their style, and businesses looking to incorporate calligraphy into event marketing and elevate their branding.
My passion for calligraphy has brought me to the depth of preserving its art through mindful learning that nurtures the next generation and creates traditional and contemporary works that can be enjoyed by many people who receive them.
Nothing beats one-of-a-kind handcrafted works for loved ones.
Martha Laurens is a calligraphy researcher, educator, penman, and Chief Creative Director of Martha Scribes Design House and Scribes Edit under the Scribes and Beyond brand, an art and calligraphy supply studio based in Sydney, Australia.
She leads all creative direction across visuals, product development, and marketing, merging classical artistry with modern design.
Renowned for her original script style, Spencerian Twist, Dancing with Spencerian, and Fun Scripts for All Levels, Martha’s teaching revives the joy, rhythm, and elegance of handwriting. Her training includes advanced studies at the Traditional School of Art in the UK, private mentorships across the USA and Europe, and four IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting) proficiency and excellence certifications in Spencerian and Illumination (2019–2025), making her one of Australia's most awarded calligraphy artists.
Martha, A sought-after instructor, teaches foundational and pointed pen scripts, including Italic, Cursive, Roundhand, Copperplate, Spencerian, and Illuminated Manuscript Painting and Gilding in traditional and modern techniques. Her global teaching includes collaborations with The Gentle Penman (Hong Kong), Pointed Pen Collective, IAMPETH Virtual, Calligraphy Italia, the Washington Calligraphy Guild, and the Australian Society of Calligraphers.
In 2024, Martha’s work was exhibited in "Disruptor—of all that matters" at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in Katoomba, Australia, an exhibition led by Dharug Elder artist Birrin Christopher Tobin. In this exhibition, she contributed a calligraphic response to a collective artistic dialogue on disruption, memory, and ancestral connection.
In early 2025, Martha was commissioned to create a formal calligraphic rendering of the mission statement of the 2nd Commando Regiment (2 Cdo Regt), an elite special forces unit of the Australian Army. The piece honours the regiment’s legacy and its Latin motto, “Foras Admonitio” (Without Warning).
Through Martha Scribes, she also offers handwriting analysis, corporate branding, and graphic design, focusing on both classical and contemporary styles. To know Martha is to encounter a rare harmony of precision, soul, and timeless elegance. She doesn’t merely teach scripts; she passes on a lineage. Her work is deeply informed, emotionally attuned, and quietly powerful. With every stroke, she revives beauty, heritage, and the discipline of the pen.
"A childhood memory of creating oil paintings and dancing that has kept me going with art and calligraphy till today. It's that memory of movement and flow, an expression of self-emotion, freedom of feeling, a dance on a surface.
It is a memory I loved once, fell on and will love forever."

THE CHATTY FRIDAY
THE CHATTY FRIDAY

![Hi it’s me again, Martha. It’s a joy to return for the 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿. And this time, I begin with a question:
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲?
Ink and paint have become more than just tools for me, they’re mirrors. They reflect memories, emotions, and the silent spaces between.
One commission work I’ll never forget is a love letter written for a client to his partner, not for show, but for love. Written with Speedball’s Hunt 101 nib, it became something lasting.
Another lives in a manuscript I bound myself. In it, I wrote of the light in Vienna as someone pausing between worlds. I had just come from Rapicciano, Italy, where I took 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 with @brody_neuenschwander and @amityparks. A class less about craft and more about letting go. The page became a reflection, shaped in my own visual language.
And then there’s a piece in the same book, drawn from my roots: a hybrid foundational hand, wrapped in Chinese mountain forms, where I lettered the words big and small (大 - on the left / 小 - on the right). A meditation on my heritage, and the balance it continues to teach me.
This week, I’ll share how I use my tools not just to shape letters or paint but to shape meaning.
Coming 𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, I’ll be guiding others through this kind of story-making:
• 𝗔 𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 with [@thegentlepenman], where we’ll illuminate our narratives in gold
• 𝗔𝗻 𝗶𝗻-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 in Sydney, the Foundation to Pointed Pen
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿, we will go deeper: a full immersive course in Illuminated Manuscripts.
For those who feel called to bring more story, soul, and even a touch of gold into your work… I’ll have something special to share with you soon.
Let’s begin. 🍻❤️
